India's impressive run in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 continued on Monday as Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched the silver medal in the women's 53kg category after producing a record-breaking performance in Glasgow. The Indian lifter finished with a combined total of 199kg, comprising 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean & jerk, to secure another medal for India at the Games.

Despite her outstanding effort, Gyaneshwari finished 7kg behind Nigeria's Onome Omolola, who claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 206kg. However, the Indian's performance was enough to earn silver while also creating a new Commonwealth record in the process.

Gyaneshwari Yadav Wins Silver with 199kg Total

Competing against a strong field, Gyaneshwari delivered a composed performance across both disciplines. She successfully lifted 88kg in the snatch before registering 111kg in the clean & jerk, taking her overall tally to 199kg.

While Nigeria's Onome Omolola proved too strong on the day with a gold medal-winning total of 206kg, Gyaneshwari comfortably secured second place to add another silver to India's growing medal tally.

Another Weightlifting Medal for India

Weightlifting has once again emerged as one of India's strongest sports at the CWG 2026, with the contingent continuing to collect medals in Glasgow.

Gyaneshwari's silver adds to an already successful campaign for the Indian weightlifting team, following standout performances from Mirabai Chanu, who claimed a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal, along with podium finishes from Chanambam Rishikanta Singh, Raja Muthupandi, and Jhandu Kumar.

Her medal further strengthens India's position in the CWG 2026 medal tally as the nation targets more podium finishes across athletics, swimming, boxing and para sports.

Commonwealth Record Highlights Gyaneshwari's Rise

Although she narrowly missed out on gold, Gyaneshwari's 199kg total and Commonwealth record show her rapid growth in international weightlifting. Finishing just 7kg behind champion Onome Omolola against a world-class field is another indication that the Indian lifter is among the leading competitors in her category.

With several medal events still to come, India will be hoping to build on this momentum and continue climbing the Commonwealth Games 2026 medal table as the action intensifies in Glasgow.
