National Walking Day 2026 is celebrated on April 1st. The day is a perfect opportunity to make this basic activity a part of your healthy lifestyle. Walking is an underrated yet powerful mode of exercise; from celebrities to influencers, many across the globe advocate and promote adopting walking as part of their daily healthy lifestyle. However, have you ever thought about how many steps a person should walk in a day and why it matters?
The traditional rule of taking at least 10,000 steps per day may no longer be valid, according to more recent scientific findings. According to a review and meta-analysis published in The Lancet Public Health in 2025, found that 7,000 steps a day delivered meaningful health benefits to help people live longer.
However, it is also important to know that every human is different, and the amount of physical activity needed for good health will also be different. If 10,000 steps a day is well above your capability, start slow, with small goals to make a habit.

These 7000 steps are apt when compared to low levels of physical activity, like merely taking 2,000 steps per day. In terms of age, healthy adults can thrive on taking between 7,000 and 10,000 steps per day, while older adults can benefit from taking between 6,000 and 8,000 steps per day without overexerting themselves.
Benefits Of Walking:
1. Walking is an easy form of exercise, and walking is good for heart health, improving circulation, and assisting in blood pressure control, which reduces the risk of heart disease.
2. It’s also good for weight management, reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes and certain cancers, and exercises joints without the toll of high-impact activities.
3. Additionally, a 20-30 minute walk will reduce stress, improve your mood, help concentration, and enhance sleep quality by releasing stress-reducing chemicals in the brain.
