Lassi and chaas are among the most favourite yoghurt drinks in India, consumed cool during summers and as part of meals. While one may think that they are similar at first sip, there are differences in their textures, tastes, compositions, and even effects on health. Let’s take a look at the real difference between Lassi and Chaas - the two popular Indian drinks.
What Is Lassi?
Lassi is a thick beverage prepared with yoghurt, known locally as dahi, along with water or milk, with added ingredients like sugar, fruits like mango or strawberry, or spices for masala lassi or salted lassi. Lassi is a perfect blend of drink and a dessert, and is very popular in Punjab, North India and across India.

What Is Chaas?
Chaas, which is also called buttermilk or chaach, is a light beverage made out of a mixture of curd and water, with cumin, black salt, mint, or ginger powder. This is the everyday beverage for people in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Southern India and across India.

Lastly, while Lassi tends to be heavy in the glass, Chaas is light and foamy.
Lassi vs Chaas: Flavours
- - The lassi tends to be sweet with the addition of sugar, honey, and fruits – especially when prepared restaurant style. Even though there is masala lassi, which is savoury, it has both sweetness and creaminess.

- - The flavour of chaas is primarily salty with tanginess. There is a sharpness of the cumin, black salt and herbs in chaas, making it like an energiser drink with a touch of sourness and mild spiciness.
Lastly, Lassi is more like a dessert, and Chaas is popular as a savoury and digestive summer drink.
How To Make Lassi At Home:
The lassi is made by blending yoghurt with water or milk, with the addition of either sugar, fruits or spices. More yoghurt with little water makes thick lassi and apt lassi
How To Make Chaas At Home:
The traditional way of making chaas involves churning it in a pot (often in madhani or whisk) using curd or yoghurt and cold water along with roasted cumin, salt, mint, and ginger, green chillies. The chaas may involve churning buttermilk from the cream/butter.
