Set amid a quiet landscape, Better Life Homes does not present itself as a typical senior living facility, but a carefully designed residential community shaped around the needs of older adults. Soil testing, earthquake-resistant construction, and temperature-sensitive design, every detail is about a comfortable and safe stay for active senior citizens.

Founders Rashmi and Bijit Sehgal have approached the project with a clear focus on convenience-led living. The apartments promote a self-contained setup, equipped with high-end kitchen appliances. Staircases are built with equal proportions, the flooring is anti-slip, and even the floors are colour-coded so residents can easily identify their level. The detailing is intentional rather than excessive.

A Quiet Approach To Sustainability

Sustainability is also a part of daily life there. Benches made from recycled plastic, home-grown fruits and vegetables, and a natural water source on the property point towards an attempt to create a system that could function with a degree of self-reliance, without appearing forced.

The founders described the project less as a business and more as an extension of their own home. As Bijit Sehgal stated, “This is our way of giving it back to India.” Their frequent visits to Switzerland seemed to have influenced the broader vision, not as a direct visual reference, but in the sense of openness and calm that the space carries. At its core, the idea is to build a community for individuals in their 50s and 60s seeking an active and independent lifestyle post-retirement.

Location Also Played A Practical Role.

One of the key reasons the founders chose this site was its proximity to Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU) Hospital, which is about ten minutes away. Despite being tucked into the hills, the property remains connected via rail and air routes, ensuring accessibility without compromising quiet. The weather, too, appeared consistent and moderate, “pleasant,” as one resident described it, aligning with the needs of older residents.

Interactions within the community added another layer to the experience. One resident described the place as “heaven,” while another shared that after her daughter’s marriage, “this community became my home.” These responses did not come across as rehearsed, but rather as reflections of how residents begin to view ageing and belonging.

The project is positioned for those who are still active and independent, but open to a more supported lifestyle. The founders indicated that in the coming years, 'assisted living facilities' will also be introduced for residents over 80 who may require additional care.

In a country where senior living is still evolving, Better Life Homes reflects a relatively new approach, one that attempts to balance independence with support, and privacy with a sense of community, highlighting that life after retirement can still be expansive, purposeful, and lived with a sense of ease.
