Forests That Glow Naturally: Forests glowing after dark are not magic, but happen due to microorganisms dwelling in decaying wood, bark, soil or moisture-rich understories. Glowing forests are usually lit up by Bioluminescent fungi, which are the most common glowing organisms in forests, Glowworms, and fireflies, occasionally, due to bacteria or plankton, glowing in the proximity of mangroves/coasts.
5 Real Forests That Glow Naturally After Dark
Here is a list of naturally glowing forest areas in which people have documented cases of bioluminescence - mostly from glowing fungi, glow worms or synchronous fireflies.
1. Daintree Rainforest
Daintree Rainforest in the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia, is one of the most famous glowing forests in the world. It is famous for ghost mushrooms (Omphalotus nidiformis), blue-green fungi growing on the logs, and the humidity of the forest that favours bioluminescence; here, the glowing of night can be observed after rainy nights when visibility is high.
2. Waitomo Glowworm Caves
Waitomo Glowworm Caves in the North Island of New Zealand are not quite a forest itself, but caves surrounded by glowworm-filled forests. The forest area is famous for thousands of blue-glowing glow worms, forest trails glowing at night, making it one of the most popular photographic destinations for bioluminescence. Here, the glowworm species is Arachnocampa luminosa.

3. Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, at the border between North Carolina and Tennessee in America, is well-known for synchronous fireflies, specifically Photinus carolinus species. Here, the flashing of thousands of fireflies in synchronisation. It is a rare natural event that can be witnessed only in select locations around the world. Here you can witness seasonal forest lighting at night.
4. Congaree National Park
Congaree National Park of the United States in central South Carolina is another internationally renowned synchronous firefly forest. The place is famous for swamp forest ecosystems, led by synchronised fireflies. Here, the seasonal nighttime firefly light show is also managed by the national park. The forest is among the most extensively studied firefly exhibits in North America.

The Western Ghats are a 1,600 km long mountain range running parallel to India's western coast, spanning Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. The forest of the Western Ghats is a true-to-life and increasingly well-documented site of fungal bioluminescence.
