Will Netanyahu Be Arrested In US? Trump Shatters NYC Mayor Mamdani’s Legal Threat Over ICC Charges

Amid speculation surrounding whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested in the US, United States President Donald Trump has affirmed that he will not be detained. Trump took to Truth Social on Monday to shut down any possibility of legal action against the Israeli PM during his visit for the United Nations summit in New York City in September.

What Did Trump Say?

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared, “Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America.” He praised Bibi for fighting against Iran, accusing the country of killing 52,000 innocent protesters and spending the last 47 years killing American soldiers and others. Trump added that those responsible for leading Iran into an “unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION" should be arrested instead.

He wrote, “Benjamin Netanyahu will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America. He is fighting against the Islamic Republic of Iran, which recently killed 52,000 innocent protestors, and has spent the last 47 years killing American Soldiers, and others. The only ones that should be arrested are the people that led Iran into this unprecedented SPIRAL OF DEATH AND DESTRUCTION, something that should have been dealt with years ago, by previous Presidents! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Mamdani's Legal Threat

While Trump didn’t mention New York City's Mayor Zohran Mamdani explicitly in his post, his remark was seen as a direct response to him. Mamdani had sparked intense political debate after publicly stating that his administration was actively examining whether local authorities had the legal authority to execute an arrest against the Israeli Prime Minister during his visit to the UN headquarters.

In an interview with The New York Times on Saturday, Mamdani said he believed Netanyahu should face justice at the ICC. “He’s a war criminal who has been charged by the International Criminal Court…Whatever the law allows me to do in New York City, that’s what we will do,” Mamdani said.

Notably, a 2024 announcement by the ICC in The Hague stated there were reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu bears responsibility for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. These allegations stem from Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, which was launched in response to the October 7, 2023, cross-border attack by Hamas.
