West Bengal Election: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday ordered repolling at West Bengal’s Falta constituency following reports of clashes between supporters of the TMC and BJP. The poll body said that fresh polling will be held in all booths from 7 am to 6 pm on May 21, even though it is scheduled weeks after the counting day for the Bengal Assembly Elections (May 4).

The counting of votes for Falta is scheduled for May 24. According to the ECI, the decision has been taken in view of “severe electoral offences and subversion of the democratic process” reported during polling held on April 29 in a large number of booths in the Falta constituency of West Bengal.

86.9% Voter Turnout Recorded In Repolling

Earlier on Friday, the ECI had announced repoll on 15 polling stations across two Assembly constituencies in Bengal's South 24 Parganas district. Accordingly, 11 booths of Magrahat Paschim Assembly constituency and 4 booths of Diamond Harbour seat in South 24 Parganas went to repolls between on May 2.

The voter turnout across 15 booths in the Diamond Harbour and Magrahat Paschim assembly constituencies was recorded 86.9 per cent till 5 pm on Saturday. According to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Diamond Harbour recorded a turnout of 87.6 per cent, while Magrahat Paschim reported 86.11 per cent.

Several voters who spoke to news agency IANS, appreciated the arrangements made by the ECI. One voter said, “Last time, the machine had malfunctioned, which is why voting is being held again. The arrangements and security are good.” However, some voters also described the repolling as inconvenient.

"This is nothing but harassment. We have our own work, yet we have to come here repeatedly to vote. It's irritating. We don't know what has happened internally," another voter remarked.
