Tamil Nadu Election Result: Actor-turned politician Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has made a striking entry into Tamil Nadu politics. It has emerged as the single largest party, reshaping the state’s electoral landscape in its very first Assembly contest. Although the party fell just short of a clear majority, its strong performance has positioned it as a key force in government formation.

TVK Falls Short Of Majority

TVK won 108 of the state’s 234 seats, while the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) secured 59 seats and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won 47. Vijay himself emerged victorious in both constituencies he contested, Perambur in North Chennai and Tiruchirappalli East. He defeated incumbent DMK candidates R D Shekar and S Inigo Irudayaraj in respective seats by significant margins.

Which Seat Will Vijay Keep?

However, reports suggest that Vijay is likely to resign from the Tiruchirappalli (East) assembly seat and retain his Perambur seat. After securing a stellar win, Vijay continued his political outreach on Tuesday by visiting prominent memorials of social reformers across Tamil Nadu. He paid homage by garlanding the statues of Periyar E V Ramasamy and BR Ambedkar, as part of his ongoing public engagements. He also held a meeting with the winning MLAs.

TVK To Form Alliance With Congress?

Despite a remarkable debut, TVK fell short of the majority mark by 10 seats in the 234-member Assembly and is now likely to seek support from smaller parties that were previously aligned with either the DMK or AIADMK. According to a report by The Indian Express, informal discussions are already underway between TVK and several regional players. If we look at the numbers, the Congress has five seats; the VCK, CPI, and CPI-M have two seats each. Together these parties offer about 11 MLAs, the number that can help TVK to cross the majority mark.

Leaders from these regional parties have also begun signalling their intent. Thol Thirumavalavan, chief of the VCK, stated that the public appears to favour a coalition arrangement and indicated that his party and its Left allies would continue within a “secular front” in the state. Meanwhile, sources within TVK suggest that Vijay himself had been open to the idea of coalition governance during the campaign.
