More than 100 prominent personalities from India and Pakistan have made a joint appeal for the normalisation of relations between the two countries. In an open letter dated June 30, they urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to resume dialogue and restore normal ties between New Delhi and Islamabad.

Open Letter To PM Modi, Sharif

The letter was drafted by OP Shah, Chairman of the 'Centre for Peace and Progress'. It has been reportedly signed by 61 Indians and 55 Pakistanis. The letter urges both governments to take meaningful steps towards restoring peace, normalcy, dialogue, and cooperation in South Asia. It also emphasises that maintaining continuous dialogue and contact is the only practical way to resolve differences.

Why Have They Written Letter?

Kashmiri leader and one of the signatories, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq stated that dialogue between India and Pakistan is essential for peace and for the people of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). In a video message, he appreciated the initiative led by OP Shah, calling it an important civil society effort at a time when official-level talks between the two governments are limited.

He further urged PM Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Sharif to restore dialogue, diplomatic engagement, and people-to-people ties, and to resolve all outstanding issues through peaceful negotiations. Farooq said, “I too have signed the appealed because I believe that the dialogue between India and Pakistan is very essential for the peace and people of J&K. I appreciate this step by OP Shah...At a time when we see that there is very limited dialogue between the governments, I feel that such an effort by the civil society is really important.”

Farooq added, “We appeal that PM Narendra Modi and Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif restore talks and also restore diplomatic and people-to-people ties. We also appeal to them to resolve issues through talks.
