UP MLC Election Results: With just a few months remaining in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, the results of MLC polls were announced on Wednesday. The ruling BJP won six of the total 11 seats, while the Samajwadi Party gained grounds by taking its tally from three to five. The Akhilesh Yadav-led party registered a victory in both seats of Varanasi, a Lok Sabha region represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Samajwadi Party Gains Grounds
The Samajwadi Party registered victory in the Varanasi Teachers', Varanasi Graduates', Agra Teachers', Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates', and Lucknow Graduates' constituencies. Along with the two seats in Varanasi, the party also won the Lucknow Graduates' seat, considered a stronghold of the saffron party. In a post on X, Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the BJP is frustrated with the poll results.
"The BJP is in a bad state, frustrated by the defeat in the Varanasi MLC elections. The Lucknow folks aren't picking up calls from the Delhi folks. The truth is that the BJP has been completely wiped out in the UP MLC elections," Yadav stated in his post.

Should BJP Be Concerned?
While the BJP managed to emerge as the single largest party, the losses in Varanasi and Lucknow have raised serious questions. The saffron party repeated its performance in the western districts but saw a decline in the central and eastern belts.
While reacting to the results, Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya stated that the party will reflect on why it could not increase its tally. "These elections are decided by highly educated and qualified voters. The BJP has repeated its previous performance, but we expected to win more seats. We will examine why we fell short," Maurya said.
The results of MLC polls are likely to boost the campaign of the Samajwadi Party. However, the results could not be considered as a benchmark for the assembly polls, as only individuals with certain qualifications are allowed to vote in these polls. The assembly election in Uttar Pradesh is scheduled to be conducted in the early months of 2027.
