  2. Restriction imposed to manage festive rush in central Pune markets.

Pune Traffic Alert: To control crowds and prevent traffic congestion, the Pune traffic police have banned heavy vehicles on Bajirao Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road till Diwali. The restrictions will remain in effect all day on Saturdays and Sundays till the end of the festival.

Deputy Commissioner of police (Traffic) Sandeep Bhajibhakre issued the order under the Motor Vehicles Act. The order has come due to overcrowding in the central areas of the city ahead of Diwali. Over the last three days, shoppers have flocked to the traditional markets, creating heavy traffic around these areas.

Bhajibhakre said, “The permission previously granted to heavy vehicles to use Bajirao Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road on Saturdays and Sundays has been temporarily withdrawn. Heavy vehicles will not be allowed on these two roads during the specified period.”

Why Heavy Vehicles Banned Only On These Two Roads?

Heavy vehicles on Bajirao Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road have been banned till Diwali. Over the past 2-3 days, these two roads have been witnessing very heavy traffic congestion due to the festive rush. As a result, heavy pressure is being created on roads around Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, Kelkar Road, and Tulshibaug.

Previously, heavy vehicles were allowed to travel on these two roads during weekends. However, due to the expected congestion in the coming days, that permission has been temporarily withdrawn.

Why These Two Roads See Unusual Traffic?

Pune's Bajirao Road and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Road serve as an important link to major commercial hubs of the city and therefore see significant traffic during festive seasons. With Diwali drawing large crowds to the city’s central markets, the movement of heavy vehicles could make traffic jams worse and create safety risks for shoppers on busy roads.

Heavy Vehicles Asked To Take Alternate Routes

To avoid this, the traffic police have asked truck and other heavy vehicle operators to take alternate routes on Saturdays and Sundays until the festive season ends. Motorists heading towards the main shopping areas have also been advised to expect delays and leave early for their journeys.
