IMD Weather Update: Southwest monsoon is expected to remain active during the first half of August, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday. After weeks of uneven rainfall, the monsoon has finally shown signs of recovery, with weather systems bringing more moisture and improving rainfall activity across several regions.

July Rainfall Deficit Improves

According to an IMD press release, rainfall during the week from July 23 to July 29, was normal across the country, with rainfall recorded 1 per cent above the Long Period Average (LPA). During this period, Central India received excess rainfall, while Northwest India recorded normal rainfall. However, rainfall remained below normal in the South Peninsula and East and Northeast India.

From June 1 to July 29, the country’s overall rainfall remained in the normal category but was still 15 per cent below the LPA. However, the rainfall deficit has improved significantly compared to earlier weeks. According to meteorologists, the improvement has been driven by a strong weather system, including a deep depression moving across Maharashtra and nearby regions.

Moreover, the interaction between the deep depression, active monsoon trough and moisture-laden winds has created favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.Heavy showers have already affected Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and nearby areas. IMD said rainfall has improved in states including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

IMD Forecast For August First Week

For the period July 30 to August 5, IMD has forecast above-normal rainfall over Central and Western India. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over states including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Rajasthan during the next few days.

Rainfall activity is also expected to continue over Northeast India, including Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal. The Western Himalayan region, including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand is also likely to receive widespread rainfall. Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh will also witness heavy rainfall. Overall, rainfall is expected to remain near normal across India during the first week of August.

Second Week Of August To Bring More Rain

For August 6 to August 12, the IMD expects the monsoon to remain active. Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh are expected to see heavy rainfall during the second week of August.
