Congress General Secretary in-charge of Communications Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday announced that the party’s high command has completed all discussions regarding the next Chief Minister of Kerala. He stated that the decision has been finalised and will be announced tomorrow. The development comes after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party National President Mallikarjun Kharge held a final round of discussions in Delhi on Wednesday to resolve the deadlock.

Rahul Gandhi Meets Kharge for Final Talks

According to news agency PTI, Gandhi met Kharge at his residence in Delhi, and the meeting lasted around 40 minutes. Earlier, the Congress MP had spoken to several Kerala leaders, including former state presidents, to understand the situation on the ground. The party is reportedly also considering feedback from workers, many of whom have been protesting and demanding clarity.

The main contenders for the post include Congress general secretary K C Venugopal, who reportedly has support from many MLAs, former opposition leader V D Satheesan, and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala. The United Democratic Front (UDF) allies are said to favour Satheesan, who is also popular among party workers and the public. The situation has become more complex due to reports that senior leader Sonia Gandhi is unwell and undergoing routine medical check-ups.

Meanwhile, the delay in announcing the CM candidate has now led to unrest on the ground as well. According to reports, Congress workers and supporters are holding protests against Venugopal in Kerala while backing V D Satheesan for the top post. In several constituencies, party workers even stopped vehicles of newly elected MLAs who supported Venugopal over Satheesan.

The workers are reportedly questioning their stand and demanding to know why they are not supporting Satheesan. In one incident, newly elected MLA KM Abhijith was surrounded by supporters at a wedding venue. When asked about his support, he assured the crowd that the “high command will take the right decision.”

In another incident, posters appeared outside the District Congress Committee office in Wayanad, considered a stronghold of the Gandhi family. The posters warned the central leadership against supporting Venugopal, saying it could hurt the party’s future in the state.
