Monsoon 2026: India may see some weather relief from scorching heat in May, as the weather department has indicated above-normal rainfall across the country, bringing early monsoon-like conditions in several regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday released its monthly rainfall outlook, giving an early indication of weather conditions across the country.

Rainfall Above Normal In Many Regions

According to the IMD, while some regions may experience excessive heat, others could witness heavy rainfall. In many parts of Northwest and North India, temperatures are expected to remain below normal, offering significant relief from scorching heat. Rainfall in May is expected to be above normal across India as a whole, with overall rainfall likely to be more than 110 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).

Monsoon Set For Mid-May Arrival

However, some regions like northeast and east-central India, may receive below-normal rainfall. The outlook noted that weather conditions over the equatorial Pacific are moving from ENSO-neutral towards El Nino, which is going to significantly impact weather patterns in India. According to the IMD, the Southwest Monsoon is expected to reach the Andaman and Nicobar Islands between May 14 and May 16. This timeline also aligns closely with the normal schedule.

IMD Predicts Mixed May Weather

Earlier in the day, IMD Director General Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra held a press conference. He provided a detailed briefing on the temperature, rainfall, and monsoon outlook for the month of May. He stated that north-west India and the Himalayan foothills region may experience above-normal rainfall during the first fortnight of the month.

As a result, temperatures are expected to remain under control across several regions, including Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. Heatwave conditions are likely to remain limited as well. However, a rise in temperatures is expected in the last week of the month.

In Eastern India and parts of the North-East, the situation is expected to be quite different as rainfall in these regions is likely to remain below normal levels. This scenario could prove challenging in terms of agriculture and water management. However, there is a possibility that some areas may also witness sudden spells of heavy rainfall, thereby posing a risk of flood-like situations.
