Congress leader DK Shivakumar took oath as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka at a ceremony held in Bengaluru on Wednesday. He was administered the oath of office by Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot. Shivakumar was also seen carrying a copy of the Constitution of India while taking oath as the CM.
The event, held at Lok Bhavan, was attended by senior leaders, including Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The development comes after Shivakumar was elected as the leader of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) during a high-stakes meeting at the Vidhan Soudha on May 30, ending nearly a month of intense political discussions and speculation over the leadership change in Karnataka.

A Look At Shivakumar's Political Journey
Shivakumar's political journey began in the early 1980s as a student leader. His breakthrough came in 1989 when, at the age of 27, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Sathanur constituency on a Congress ticket. He retained this seat in the 1994, 1999, and 2004 elections.
Following the constituency delimitation, he was shifted to Kanakapura, where he continued his winning streak in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023. On July 2, 2026, he took charge as the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Following Congress's landslide victory in the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, Shivakumar was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka.
