Filmmaker Suparn Verma revealed that extensive preparation went into his film Haq (2025), starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi. He shared that Yami even learnt the Holy Quran for her role and the team spent nearly a year and a half understanding Islamic law to bring authenticity to the story. Speaking to BBC Asian Network, he said, "We spent almost a year and a half understanding Islamic law."

The filmmaker said, "Everybody has information, you don’t know whether it’s right or wrong. In that space, I wanted Haq to be a voice of reason."

HAQ is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language courtroom drama directed by Suparn Verma that delves into complex questions of justice, rights, and personal law. The film features Yami Gautam Dhar and Emraan Hashmi in leading roles, with Sheeba Chaddha delivering a pivotal performance. It is jointly produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta and Harman Baweja under the banners of Junglee Pictures, Insomnia Films and Baweja Studios.

The narrative is inspired by the historic Supreme Court verdict in Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, a landmark case that addressed matrimonial rights within Muslim households and sparked nationwide debate.

The screenplay has been written by Reshu Nath, while the film’s technical aspects are handled by a strong creative team, with Vishal Mishra composing the music, Pratham Mehta serving as the cinematographer and Ninad Khanolkar overseeing the editing. The story reportedly draws from journalist Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat ki Beti, adding journalistic depth to the courtroom drama. Even before its release, Haq attracted legal attention and controversy over its depiction of the Shah Bano case, underscoring the sensitivity and continued relevance of the issues it explores.
