Mithun Chakraborty has enjoyed some of the most-successful years in Hindi and Bengali cinema. Popularly known as Disco Dancer and Mithun Da, he continues to captivate audiences with his performances. However, beyond stardom, his personal life has often stirred headlines. A major anecdote about his life spread like a wildfire and it shook his personal and professional life. It was in 1985, when rumours were rife that Mithun Chakraborty had secretly married late actress Sridevi. Though never publicly confirmed, the two were said to have remained married until 1988.
The rumoured secret marriage between Mithun and Sridevi pushed his marriage to Yogeeta Bali to a breaking point. Deeply devastated by the betrayal, Yogeeta reportedly attempted suicide as the emotional strain became unbearable. The drama ultimately ended when Sridevi learned that Mithun had never followed through on his promise to divorce Yogeeta. In 1988, Sridevi and Mithun reportedly parted ways.
Veteran actress, Sujata Mehta, in an interview with Pinkvilla's Hindi Rush, revealed that the actress was very disturbed after she broke up with Mithun. "She used to be so disturbed but itni professional ke jaise camera on hota tha aur vo kisi ki nahin. She was only for camera par uske baad jaake kone mein vo bhi baith jaati thi zyada maine usko cheda nahin. They were madly in love I suppose so they get married also na shaadi bhi hui thi na uski han aise bolte shaadi bhi hui thi pata nai," said Sujata.

Sridevi eventually moved forward, finding lasting love with producer Boney Kapoor. The couple married in 1996 and raised two daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor, both of whom have since followed in their mother's footsteps to become Bollywood actresses.
Despite the intense public scandal, Mithun Chakraborty remained married to Yogeeta Bali and the couple stayed together through the ensuing decades. Sridevi’s own legendary career continued to reach new heights until her tragic and untimely passing in 2018.
Today, the rumoured liaison between Mithun and Sridevi survives as one of Bollywood’s most enduring mysteries. It remains a poignant saga of love and heartbreak.
