Actress Rhea Chakraborty has finally received relief as a special court in Mumbai allowed the defreezing of several bank accounts linked to her family. These accounts were frozen by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in 2020 during the investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case. The latest order brought a partial closure to a long-pending legal issue.

Court Grants Relief To Chakraborty Family

On April 25, 2026, Mumbai special court permitted the unfreezing of bank accounts held by Rhea Chakraborty, her brother Showik Chakraborty, and their mother Sandhya Chakraborty. These accounts had been restricted for years due to the ongoing probe.

Background Of The Case

The accounts were originally frozen in 2020 after an FIR was filed in connection with Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. Although some accounts were released in 2021, a few remained restricted. The family later approached the court again to access funds held in ICICI, Axis, and Kotak banks.

Legal Argument By The Defence

The lawyers representing Rhea Chakraborty, Mr. Ayaz Khan, and Ms. Zehra Charania maintained that the Narcotics Control Bureau had not followed due process. They pointed out that according to NDPS, freezing of assets should always have a time period within which it needs to be done by a competent authority, but here no such process was undertaken. Below are the two Acts being referred to regarding Rhea Chakraborty:

1. Section 68F of NDPS allows authorized officers to seize or freeze the property if the officer suspects that the property is involved in any kind of unlawful activities related to drugs.

2. Sub-section (2) states that this power will not be abused; for this reason, it is necessary that the order of freezing should be reviewed by a competent authority within a certain period, so that assets are not blocked indefinitely.

NCB’s Opposition In Court

The additional prosecutor, Geeta Nayyar, opposed the plea, claiming that Rhea Chakraborty was allegedly linked to a drug network and that the action taken was justified. They maintained that the investigating officer had valid reasons to freeze the accounts during the probe.

Court’s Observation And Final Order

Special Judge U.C. Deshmukh noted that the law requires confirmation of such actions within 30 days. Since this step was not followed, the court found the freezing invalid. The judge stated, “The NCB does not deny that there is no compliance of Sub-section (2) of Section 68F of the Act… Therefore… the application is liable to be allowed.”
