Ram Gopal Varma has expressed surprise after Mamata Banerjee chose not to resign as Chief Minister despite her party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Reacting to the outcome, the filmmaker questioned the decision, as the BJP defeated the Trinamool Congress. The election results, announced on Monday, have sparked widespread political reactions and debates over leadership accountability in the state.

Ram Gopal Varma said, "After so many decades in politics and 15 years as CM, I can’t believe that @MamataOfficial is ignoring that democracy by its very DNA is about institutions and attacking them amounts to attacking democracy."

Mamata Banerjee refused to resign, claiming that the Bharatiya Janata Party had 'looted' the elections.

Recently, Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri also expressed his opinions on the most recent political events in West Bengal. The creator of Bengal Files shared an old video in which he discussed the challenges he had when starting his films in West Bengal.

Vivek Agnihotri said, "For those who don’t know, Mamata Banerjee cancelled me in Bengal after the release of #TheKashmirFiles. The film was taken out of cinema halls, and she said I would NOT BE ALLOWED TO ENTER Bengal. Last year, she BANNED #TheBengalFiles completely in West Bengal. Our trailer launch was blocked. We were attacked and assaulted. Dozens of FIRs were filed against me. I was cancelled in Bengal. I couldn’t even go to receive my award from the Governor."

'I Will Not Resign': Mamata Banerjee

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee accused the Election Commission (EC) and the BJP of 'looting' the democratic process. Despite the numbers, she insisted that her party remains the moral victor. "I will not resign. I did not lose. I will not go to Raj Bhavan... the question doesn't arise. We didn't lose the election. They can defeat us officially through the Election Commission, but morally, we won the election," she said.

Additionally, Mamata Banerjee claimed that she was 'manhandled and kicked in the belly' throughout the counting procedure and that her guards were attacked while CCTV cameras were purposefully turned down.

The BJP easily surpassed the halfway point of 148 seats in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 207 seats. Bengal's political landscape saw a dramatic change when the 15-year-ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) was reduced to only 80 seats.
