Hansika Motwani has approached a Mumbai sessions court, filing a defamation suit against her estranged sister-in-law, Muskan Nancy James. She has sought Rs 2 crore in damages, along with a request to restrain James from making further statements and to issue a public apology. Filed through advocate Adnan Shaikh, the plea alleges that James made false and defamatory claims on social media, accusing Hansika and her brother Prashant Motwani of domestic violence.
The petition also claims that the allegations stem from a loan dispute, stating that Muskan had borrowed Rs 27 lakh during her marriage to Prashant and has not repaid the amount despite repeated requests.
Hansika Motwani has stated that she had minimal involvement in her brother Prashant Motwani’s marriage and was not living with the couple. She added that she was largely unaware of their personal issues as the relationship deteriorated over time.
The legal battle follows an FIR filed by Muskan Nancy James, who accused her husband and Hansika of cruelty, harassment, and interference in her marriage, along with demands for expensive gifts. She also claimed the stress led to her developing Bell's Palsy. Hansika has denied all allegations, maintaining she was not part of any shared household.
Apart from the civil defamation suit, Hansika has also filed a criminal defamation case against James in an Andheri magistrate’s court under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. She had earlier approached the Bombay High Court to quash the FIR, calling the accusations baseless, with the court issuing notice on her plea.

The dispute stems from the troubled marriage between Prashant Motwani and Muskan, who married in 2020 and have reportedly been living separately since 2022. Hansika also clarified that she has been living separately from her own husband since her marriage in 2022.
