Britney Spears has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs in Ventura County, near Los Angeles. However, prosecutors indicated she may avoid jail time if a plea deal is reached. The complaint does not specify the substance involved in her early March arrest.
Spears is set to be arraigned on Monday, though she is not required to appear in court as the charge is a misdemeanor and can be handled by her attorney. The pop star, who rose to fame in the late 1990s with hits like ...Baby One More Time, has largely stayed away from music in recent years.
After her arrest, a representative for Britney Spears called the incident “completely inexcusable,” adding that she would comply with the law. Soon after, Spears checked herself into rehab.
Prosecutors said she could avoid jail time through a plea deal, a common option in cases without prior convictions or injuries. This would likely involve pleading guilty to reckless driving, leading to 12 months of probation, a driver safety course, and a fine.

Spears’ past has also been under scrutiny. Following her 2007 public breakdown, she was placed under a conservatorship led by her father, Jamie Spears, which controlled her personal and financial life until it ended in 2021 amid the ‘Free Britney’ movement. In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, Spears denied using hard drugs or having a drinking problem, though she admitted to taking Adderall.
