Asha Bhosle Tribute Sparks Controversy In Pakistan, Government Issues Show-Cause Notice To A News Channel

The demise of legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle has left the music world in deep sorrow, with tributes pouring in from across borders. However, a tribute aired in Pakistan has now sparked controversy. A leading Pakistani news channel has been issued a show-cause notice for broadcasting content related to her legacy, raising questions about media regulations and cross-border cultural content.

Notice Issued To Geo News For Tributing Asha Bhosle 

Pakistan’s media regulator, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), has sent a show-cause notice to a channel Geo News. The notice was issued for airing content related to Asha Bhosle’s death, including visuals from Indian films and songs.

What Triggered The Action? 

As per the notice, the channel is accused of violating regulations by airing Indian content. It was stated that airing visuals from Indian films and songs in remembrance was in violation of the existing guidelines.

The notice cited the ruling of the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2018, which prohibited any Indian content on TV channels in Pakistan.

Channel’s Managing Director’s Response To PEMRA

Geo News Managing Director Azhar Abbas shared the development on social media. He stated that remembering and appreciating legendary artists has always been a part of journalism. He also added that even more of Asha Bhosle’s timeless songs should have been shown to honour her legacy.

Legal Action And Deadline

The notice has summoned the channel’s CEO Mir Ibrahim Rahman to appear on April 27. The channel has also been asked to submit a written response within 14 days explaining why legal action should not be taken.

Asha Bhosle’s Passing

Asha Bhosle passed away on April 12 in Mumbai at the age of 92. Tributes have come from across the world, highlighting her unmatched contribution to music. The singer was cremated and laid to rest on April 13 with full state honours at Shivaji Park Crematorium, Maharashtra.
