Cricket West Indies (CWI) has taken a series of major cost-cutting measures as the board continues to deal with financial pressure. On Friday, September 25, CWI announced a 25% cut in central contract salaries. The contract period for domestic players has also been reduced to seven months. International players, however, will continue to have 12-month contracts.

The board has also suspended this year’s men’s Super50 tournament and women’s T20 Blaze as part of its efforts to reduce expenses.

CWI described the measures as a response to the financial, developmental and competitive challenges facing West Indies cricket.

“We appreciate the spirit of cooperation of the West Indies Players’ Association and the players who have demonstrated their understanding of the circumstances we all face,” CWI chief executive Chris Dehring said.

“While not ideal, it is a necessary step towards financial stability,” he added.

Travel Costs Add To CWI’s Financial Pressure

CWI said the cost of travelling and providing accommodation for players and staff has put additional pressure on its finances.

Dehring pointed to the board’s spending on domestic air travel as one of the major financial burdens.

“Indeed, over eighty million US dollars has been spent by Cricket West Indies with domestic airlines over the past 15 years, without a reciprocating dollar of sponsorship from those beneficiaries,” Dehring said.

He added that the board is also dealing with an immediate cash-flow problem caused by years of carrying these costs and the resulting financial losses.

$16 Million ICC Loan

The latest measures are also linked to a US$16 million (around INR 153 crore) loan approved by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for CWI.

According to Dehring, the board will need to meet certain “critical metrics” to access the funds, with that process beginning this month.

The financial situation has therefore forced CWI to make difficult decisions, including reducing player payments and cancelling major domestic competitions.

Olympic Qualification Events To Replace Tournaments

CWI will instead organise qualification tournaments for the men’s and women’s cricket events at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The West Indies cannot compete as a single regional team at the Olympics. This is because the International Olympic Committee allows participation from individual sovereign countries with recognised National Olympic Committees.

The qualification events will therefore provide players with an opportunity to compete for places in the Olympic pathway while CWI attempts to manage its current financial challenges.

West Indies will now be seen featuring against India for the three-match ODI series followed by a five match T20I series which is scheduled to start from September 27.
