Vaibhav Sooryavanshi bounced back in stunning fashion after a difficult run of form, smashing the fastest fifty in List A cricket history during the Tri-Nation Series final against Sri Lanka A on Sunday.

The 15-year-old young batter walked out to open the innings at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium after Sri Lanka A chose to bowl first. From the very first ball, he showed his attacking intent by hitting a boundary off Mohamed Shiraz.

Coming into the final, Sooryavanshi had struggled for runs in the tournament and had also been involved in an on-field altercation with an opposition player earlier in the week. However, he put all of that behind him with a breathtaking batting display.

The young batting prodigy smashed the Sri Lankan bowlers to all over the ground, especially Shiraz, whom he attacked relentlessly. In one over alone, he hammered three sixes and two boundaries, amassing 26 runs and putting the bowlers under immense pressure.

Sooryavanshi completed his half-century in just 11 balls, creating a new world record for the fastest fifty in List A cricket. The previous record belonged to Sri Lankan batter Kaushalya Weeratne, who had reached the milestone in 12 balls nearly two decades ago while playing for Ragama Cricket Club.

With this knock, Sooryavanshi also broke the Indian record for the fastest List A fifty. The earlier record was held by Sarfaraz Khan, who had scored a fifty in 15 balls during a Vijay Hazare Trophy match.

Despite being only 15 years old, Sooryavanshi has already made a strong impression in domestic cricket. Since making his List A debut in December 2024, he has played 12 matches and has a highest score of 190 for Bihar.

Sooryavanshi missed fastest century

The young left-hander did not slow down after reaching his fifty. He continued attacking the bowlers and looked set to score one of the fastest centuries in List A history. However, he fell just six runs short of a remarkable hundred.

Trying to keep up the aggressive approach, Sooryavanshi was caught at mid-off off the bowling of Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige. His incredible innings came to an end at 94 runs from only 29 balls, just before the end of the Powerplay.

Although he missed out on a century, his explosive knock will be remembered as one of the most remarkable innings ever played by a young cricketer in List A cricket.
