Tilak Varma Falls For 99 As East Zone Moves Closer To Duleep Trophy Title

Tilak Varma was once again at the centre of South Zone’s fightback, but his impressive run came to a painful end just one run short of a century on Day 4 of the Duleep Trophy 2026-27 final against East Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

South Zone were already nine wickets down when Tilak reached 99. With only the tailender for company, the left-hander tried to find the boundary that would have taken him to his second century of the tournament.

Instead, he miscued a lofted shot and gave a simple return catch to East Zone off-spinner Kounain Quraishi.

Tilak’s dismissal brought South Zone’s first innings to an end at 336, leaving East Zone with a massive 372-run lead.

Mukesh Kumar was the standout bowler for East Zone, finishing with figures of 3/62. Mohammed Shami, Shikhar Mohan and Kounain Quraishi picked up two wickets each.

With only one day left in the match, East Zone are now in a commanding position and are closing in on their first Duleep Trophy title in 14 years.

Tilak stands tall before late South Zone collapse

South Zone began the fourth day at 242/6, with Tilak and Chama Milind looking to reduce the huge deficit.

The pair put together a useful partnership and gave South Zone some hope. Milind scored 43 before his dismissal opened the door for East Zone.

South Zone then lost their last four wickets for just 18 runs.

Tilak, however, continued to fight until the very end. His 99 was another example of the form he has shown throughout this Duleep Trophy campaign.

East Zone had already done most of the damage earlier in the match, thanks largely to their captain Ishan Kishan. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed a career-best 270, helping East Zone post a huge 708 in their first innings.

Tilak Varma continues impressive red-ball run

Tilak’s 99 was not an isolated performance. The 23-year-old has been in excellent touch in red-ball cricket and played a major role in South Zone reaching the final.

In the semi-final against North Zone in Bengaluru, Tilak produced two very different but equally important knocks.

After South Zone slipped to 80/5 in the first innings, he held the innings together with an unbeaten 116. He then returned in the second innings and scored an unbeaten 51 off 79 balls to help his side chase down 181.

Those performances showed that Tilak can adapt his game according to the situation, something that will be important as he looks to establish himself as a serious red-ball batter.

His overall First-Class numbers are also impressive. Tilak has an average of more than 58 from 24 matches, with eight centuries and seven fifties.

Ishan Kishan’s 270 puts East Zone in control

While Tilak has been South Zone’s biggest positive, Ishan Kishan has been the main reason East Zone are now on the verge of winning the title.

Kishan produced a stunning 270 earlier in the final, hitting 30 fours and seven sixes during his marathon innings.

It was the second-highest individual score in a Duleep Trophy final. Only Raman Lamba’s 320 for North Zone in 1987 remains ahead of Kishan’s effort. With a lead of 372 runs and just one day left, East Zone have put themselves firmly in the driver’s seat.
