India all-rounder Deepti Sharma reached another major milestone on Sunday, becoming only the second player in women's international cricket to take 350 wickets across all formats.
Deepti started the Women's T20 World Cup match against Pakistan with 349 wickets to her name. She needed just one more to reach the landmark and got there early in her spell. By the end of her first two overs, she had taken two wickets while giving away only five runs.
Only former India fast bowler Jhulan Goswami, who finished her career with 355 wickets, remains ahead of Deepti on the all-time list.
| Rank | Player | Country | Wickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jhulan Goswami | India | 355 |
| 2 | Deepti Sharma* | India | 351 |
| 3 | Katherine Sciver-Brunt | England | 335 |
| 4 | Ellyse Perry | Australia | 332 |
| 5 | Sophie Ecclestone | England | 327 |
| 6 | Shabnim Ismail | South Africa | 318 |
More importantly, Deepti's spell changed the course of the match. Pakistan had made a positive start and their openers put together 38 runs, their highest opening partnership against India in Women's T20 Internationals. India needed a breakthrough, and Deepti delivered almost immediately.
Coming on to bowl in the fifth over, she quickly slowed down the scoring with her clever changes of pace and flight. Her first ball beat Muneeba Ali outside the off stump and signalled the pressure she was about to create.
A few deliveries later, she struck. Gull Feroza tried to play a reverse sweep to keep the runs flowing but failed to get proper contact. The ball went straight to Bharti Fulmali at backward point, who completed the catch comfortably.
Deepti returned for another spell with Pakistan looking to build momentum. Ayesha Zafar had just found the boundary twice in the previous over, but Deepti once again tightened the screws.
She conceded only three runs in the over and picked up another wicket. After keeping Zafar quiet with a disciplined line, she tempted her into a sweep shot. The ball went towards short fine leg, where Smriti Mandhana held on to a sharp low catch.

It was another reminder of Deepti's value to the Indian team. On pitches that offer help to spinners, she remains one of India's biggest match-winners.
If similar conditions continue during the tournament, Deepti will have every chance of moving past Jhulan Goswami's record in the near future while playing a key role in India's campaign.
