India have received a major boost ahead of next month's two-Test series against Sri Lanka, as fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been declared fit to play by the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Bumrah was included in the squad only after passing his fitness assessment. He had picked up an impact injury during the recent ODI series against England, which forced him to miss the third ODI at Lord's.
A senior BCCI official told PTI that Bumrah has fully recovered and successfully completed all the fitness tests required by the Centre of Excellence. The official added that the team expects him to be available for both Test matches, as he remains one of India's most important players.
Why Sri Lanka series is important for India?
The first Test against Sri Lanka will begin on August 15 in Galle, while the second Test is scheduled to be played in Colombo from August 23.
The series is crucial for India in the World Test Championship. The team needs to win seven of its remaining nine Tests to stay in the race for a place in the final. A 2-0 victory in Sri Lanka would be an ideal start before India travel to New Zealand for what is expected to be a challenging away series.
Crucial update on Harshit, Nitish Reddy, Sundar and Akash Deep's injuries
Meanwhile, India are dealing with several injury concerns. Harshit Rana and Nitish Reddy have both been ruled out with hamstring and quadriceps injuries, respectively. Washington Sundar will miss the first Test because of a hamstring injury, while Akash Deep is still recovering from stress-related back injuries and remains unavailable.
