India’s new T20I era will begin later this month with a two-match series against Ireland, starting on June 26. All eyes will be on Shreyas Iyer, who has been appointed as India’s new T20I captain following Suryakumar Yadav’s exit from the role.
The squad for the series has already been announced, and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has emerged as the biggest talking point. The young batter’s inclusion has generated plenty of excitement, but it has also raised questions about India’s top-order combination.
Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson are already established options at the top, and Sooryavanshi’s arrival has added further competition for places. With only a limited number of spots available, the team management faces some important decisions.

That also brings Shubman Gill into the conversation.
According to a RevSportz report, the selectors discussed bringing Gill back into India’s T20I plans after the T20 World Cup. He was even considered as a possible captain after the decision was made to move on from Suryakumar. The report claimed that the race for the captaincy eventually came down to Shreyas Iyer and Gill, while some within the team management also felt Sanju Samson had the qualities to lead the side.
In the end, however, the selectors put their faith in Shreyas and handed him the captaincy, at least until the Asian Games scheduled for September and October.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had earlier explained during the selection press conference that Shreyas’ success as a leader in the IPL was a major factor behind the decision.

India’s new T20 cycle is expected to build towards major events such as the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028 and the next T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. With more than two years to go before that tournament, there is still plenty of time for the team to evolve.
The RevSportz report also suggested that India may require a dependable batter in overseas conditions, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, where bowlers often have a greater impact on matches. Gill’s style of batting could make him a strong candidate for that role.
