India spinner Shree Charani created history during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 by becoming the highest wicket-taking Indian in a single edition of the tournament.
The 21-year-old left-arm spinner from Andhra Pradesh achieved the milestone in India’s Group A match against Bangladesh at Old Trafford in Manchester on Thursday. Charani finished with figures of 2 for 21 from her four overs and took her tally to 12 wickets in the competition.
Shree Charani breaks Poonam Yadav’s record
She went past Poonam Yadav’s record of 10 wickets, which was set during the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup. Charani reached the landmark when she dismissed Shorna Akter in the final over of Bangladesh’s innings before adding another wicket to extend her record.
The overall tournament record remains with New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr, who claimed 15 wickets in the previous edition.
Among Indians, Charani now leads the list for most wickets in a single Women’s T20 World Cup. Poonam Yadav follows with 10 wickets in 2020, while Diana David took nine wickets in the 2010 edition. Poonam Yadav and Radha Yadav also recorded eight wickets in the 2014 and 2018 tournaments, respectively.
India's poor fielding vs Bangladesh
Despite Charani’s achievement, India’s fielding continued to be a concern as Bangladesh posted 136 for 8. India dropped four catches during the power play, giving Bangladesh valuable chances.
Opener Juairiya Ferdous was the main beneficiary, surviving multiple opportunities before scoring 33 runs from 31 balls. Nandni Sharma eventually dismissed her with a return catch.
India entered the match under pressure after their defeat to South Africa and needed a win to strengthen their chances of reaching the semifinals.

Renuka Thakur, playing her first game of the tournament, made an immediate impact by dismissing Dilara Akter for four in her opening over.
Charani completed the milestone in last over
Charani ended the innings strongly with two wickets in the final over while conceding only three runs. Radha Yadav also played an important role with the ball, finishing with figures of 3 for 28. She removed Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana and Sobhana Mostary in a crucial spell.
India’s bowlers, especially the spinners, made good use of the conditions. However, the team also conceded seven wides and three no-balls, adding to a fielding performance that left room for improvement.
