Former India captain Rohit Sharma is currently making headlines since there are talks about his fitness and chances of playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. Rohit has been struggling with injuries in recent months, and his physical condition is becoming a growing concern for both the team management and the BCCI.

Rohit suffered an injury during IPL 2026

Rohit suffered an injury during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026. The injury forced him to miss several matches afterwards. Even when he returned, he mostly featured as an ‘Impact Player’, which has raised further doubts about whether he is fully fit to handle the demands of international cricket.

Despite the concerns, Rohit has been included in India’s squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. However, his participation is still not guaranteed because he must clear a fitness test before taking the field.

BCCI Worried on Rohit Sharma's Workload

According to a report in the Times of India, the BCCI is worried about whether Rohit can manage the physical workload required in ODI cricket, especially with the 2027 World Cup in mind.

A BCCI source told the newspaper, “Rohit did not report to the BCCI's Centre of Excellence during those three weeks. While he has visibly shed some weight, there are concerns regarding his ability to field for the full 50 overs. He will be required to field for the entire 50 overs, as the 'Impact Player' rule—prevalent in the IPL—does not apply in international cricket. When you are nearing the age of 40, the body naturally takes longer to recover.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal To Be Backup Opener

With uncertainty surrounding Rohit’s fitness, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is being looked at as a possible backup option. Ishan Kishan has also been picked in the squad against Afghanistan as an opening option, but selectors are reportedly preparing Jaiswal for a bigger role in the future if needed.

Why BCCI Not Satisfied with Rohit Sharma's performance

The report also claimed that the Indian team management is not fully satisfied with Rohit’s recent batting approach. During the 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit was praised for his fearless and attacking style at the top of the order, often taking on bowlers from the very first ball.

However, after retiring from Test cricket, his batting in the ODI series against Australia and New Zealand reportedly lacked the same aggression. The management is believed to be unhappy with that change in approach, especially at a time when the team expects experienced players to set the tone early in the innings.
