The third and final ODI between India and England at Lord’s on July 19 could turn out to be Rohit Sharma’s last appearance in the 50-over format.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the BCCI’s senior selection committee has informed Rohit that they plan to move in a different direction once the England series ends. The selectors have reportedly made it clear that they want to start preparing a younger group of players for the future, with the 2027 ODI World Cup firmly in their plans.
The report adds that the selection committee held discussions with Rohit last week in the presence of head coach Gautam Gambhir. During the meeting, he was informed about the team’s roadmap going forward.
Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is believed to be one of the players the selectors want to back in the coming years. Despite impressive performances, Jaiswal has spent considerable time waiting for opportunities, and the management now wants to give him a longer run in the ODI side.
“Selectors have informed Rohit he is not in their scheme of things post the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. Though he wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court to decide his future,” a source in the Indian board informed.
The report further states that Rohit also spoke with a few BCCI officials during the England tour and was disappointed with the decision.
The 38-year-old has already stepped away from two international formats. He retired from T20 Internationals on June 29, 2024, shortly after leading India to the T20 World Cup title. He then announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, through an Instagram post before India’s tour of England.
Since his Test retirement, the selectors and team management have reportedly focused on building a younger squad with an eye on the future. As part of that approach, players like Yashasvi Jaiswal have continued to wait for consistent opportunities despite producing strong performances.
The selectors had also handed India’s ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill last year as part of the transition.
Rohit’s record as India’s ODI captain remains one of the highlights of his career. He guided the team to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where India’s fearless batting approach at the top of the order became a defining feature of the campaign. That aggressive style continued under his leadership during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where India lifted the title defeating South Africa in the final.
