Former Pakistan captain Babar Azam has been ruled out of the first Test match against Bangladesh, which will take place from 8-12 May in Dhaka.

Why Babar will miss 1st Test vs Bangladesh

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Babar, who recently won the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, has suffered a knee injury and will miss the opening Test.

“Pakistan batter Babar Azam will not be available for the first Test match against Bangladesh due to an injury in his left knee" said PCB in a statement.

The board also said that doctors are still checking the seriousness of the injury and more details will be shared later.

“The team’s medical panel is currently assessing his condition. Further updates will be shared in due course," the statement read.

The two-match Test series is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle. The first Test will take place at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium from May 8 to 12. After that, the teams will travel to the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium for the second Test, scheduled from May 16 to 20.

Bangladesh and Pakistan in WTC Standings

At the moment, Bangladesh are eighth in the World Test Championship standings. They have played two matches so far, with one draw and one loss, giving them a win percentage of 16.67. Pakistan are currently fifth on the table with one win and one defeat. They have earned 12 points and hold a 50 per cent win percentage.

Babar Azam's last cricketing outing

Babar Azam, who was going through a lean patch, has regained his form in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, where he amassed 588 runs in 11 innings, an average of 73.50, and a strike rate of 145.90. He scored two centuries, including 103 against Islamabad United, and three fifties that helped his franchise, Peshawar Zalmi, to win the title.
