- India vs England 1st T20I will take place on July 1.
India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer remained tight-lipped over whether teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will make his international debut in the opening T20I against England at the Banks Homes Riverside Ground on July 1.
The 15-year-old batter earned his maiden senior India call-up after impressing with his fearless batting in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) and the tri-series in Sri Lanka. Despite his impressive performances, Sooryavanshi is still waiting for his first appearance in international cricket.
The youngster was also part of India’s squad for the recently concluded two-match T20I series against Ireland but did not get a game. India went on to lose the series 2-0, allowing Ireland to register their first-ever international series victory over the Men in Blue.
Following that defeat, head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer faced criticism from fans and experts for not giving the teenage prodigy an opportunity. With India now set to begin a five-match T20I series against England from July 1, speculation over Sooryavanshi’s debut has once again gathered pace.
However, Iyer chose not to reveal anything about India’s playing combination. Addressing the media on the eve of the first T20I, the skipper said the team management would keep the playing XI confidential, adding that revealing it beforehand would only help the opposition understand India’s plans.

Even when asked directly if Sooryavanshi was finally set to make his debut, Iyer smiled but declined to provide any hint, maintaining that the team would announce its playing XI at the appropriate time.
“Our hands are tied,” said Shreyas in the pre-match press-conference. “This is very private. We can’t let everyone know what combination we are going to play, as the opponents would also find out. He’s a brilliant prodigy and whenever he gets an opportunity to play, he will perform brilliantly.”
