Bhuvneshwar Kumar made his India comeback after nearly four years following his impressive performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the experienced fast bowler has failed to make an impact in the ongoing T20I series against New Zealand.
India recalled Bhuvneshwar for the five-match series in the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, hoping his experience would strengthen the bowling attack. But the 36-year-old has conceded 139 runs and picked up just one wicket in three matches, bowling 12 overs so far.
Despite the difficult start, Bhuvneshwar has revealed that returning to the Indian team was never something he actively chased during his time away from international cricket.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Opens Up On India Return
Speaking to reporters after the third T20I in Wellington on Tuesday, Bhuvneshwar said he focused on the opportunities that came his way rather than worrying about a possible India comeback.
The pacer admitted that representing the country remains a dream, but he did not make it his only goal over the last four years.
“To tell you the truth, I did not chase (India return). Yes, it is a dream. I am not saying that I am not happy. I am very happy. To play for India, to represent India, it is a matter of pride,” he said.
Bhuvneshwar added that he continued to work on his cricket and fitness while taking on different challenges during his time away from the national team.
“So, I am feeling very proud that I made a comeback. But the truth is that I did not chase it. For four years, whatever was coming in front of me, tournaments, challenges, whatever – about cricket, about fitness, whatever else, I kept doing it. I never thought that I would want to play cricket for (just for India) comeback,” he said.
Bhuvneshwar Credits IPL Performances For India Comeback
Bhuvneshwar’s return to international cricket followed two successful IPL seasons with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The right-arm pacer played an important role as RCB won consecutive titles in 2025 and 2026.

He picked up 17 wickets in the 2025 season before improving that tally to 28 wickets in IPL 2026. Those performances helped him get back into contention for an India recall.
The veteran bowler credited his recent IPL form for opening the door to his return to the national side.
“I think all the credit goes to my [last] two years of IPL. Because of that, [an India comeback] is happening,” he added.
Will India Continue With Bhuvneshwar Kumar?
India have already secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match T20I series against New Zealand after winning the third match by six wickets.
With the series decided, the team management could use the remaining two matches to assess its options and give opportunities to other players.

It remains to be seen whether Bhuvneshwar gets another chance to find his rhythm or India decide to make changes to their bowling attack for the final two T20Is.
