Abhishek Sharma produced a breathtaking batting display as India defeated New Zealand by six wickets in the third T20I at Wellington on Tuesday. The victory gave India an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
The left-handed opener smashed a 35-ball century and finished with 113 off just 38 deliveries. His innings included 11 sixes and nine fours as India chased down the target of 199 in only 13.2 overs, with 40 balls remaining.

Abhishek found an equally aggressive partner in 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who helped India get off to a flying start. The opening pair put the New Zealand bowlers under pressure from the very first over and made the chase look remarkably easy.
Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Give India Explosive Start
India could not have asked for a better start to the chase. Jacob Duffy conceded 26 runs in the opening over as Abhishek and Sooryavanshi went after the New Zealand bowlers without hesitation.
The two batters added another 17 runs in the second over and followed it up with 21 in the third. India raced to 64 without losing a wicket in just three overs, putting the hosts on the back foot early in the innings.

The assault continued during the Powerplay. India collected 20 runs in the fourth over, 16 in the fifth and another 18 in the sixth to reach 118 without loss after six overs.
Abhishek was particularly destructive, bringing up his half-century in just 15 balls. Sooryavanshi also played an important role, matching his senior partner’s attacking approach and keeping the scoreboard moving at a remarkable pace.
New Zealand finally got a breakthrough in the eighth over when Matthew Fisher dismissed Sooryavanshi for 45 off 19 balls. The young opener hit four sixes and four boundaries during his entertaining knock.
However, the wicket did little to slow India down. Abhishek continued his assault alongside Sanju Samson, taking India to 156/1 after eight overs.
Abhishek Sharma Smashes 35-Ball Century
Abhishek had no intention of slowing down after reaching his half-century. After a relatively quiet ninth over, he turned his attention to Kyle Jamieson and brought up his century in just 35 balls during the 10th over.
The hundred was a result of clean hitting and fearless strokeplay, with the Indian opener finding the boundary regularly throughout his innings.
He continued to attack the New Zealand bowlers, smashing two boundaries and a six in the nest over. Jamieson eventually ended his remarkable innings, dismissing him for 113 off 38 deliveries.
By then, Abhishek had done most of the damage. India were firmly in control of the chase, with the target well within reach.
India Survive Late Wobble To Seal Series
Despite Abhishek’s departure, India remained in a strong position to finish the match comfortably. However, the hosts managed to pick up a few more wickets towards the end, with Shreyas Iyer and Samson among those dismissed.
The late wickets brought a brief pause to India’s charge, but the visitors had too much ground covered to let the match slip away. They eventually reached 199 in 13.2 overs to complete a six-wicket victory.
Jamieson finished with two wickets, while Fisher and Mitchell Santner claimed one each. However, New Zealand’s bowlers struggled to contain the Indian batters, with none able to keep their economy rate below 12 runs per over.
The win also confirmed India’s series triumph, giving them a 3-0 lead with two matches remaining.
Daryl Mitchell’s Half-Century Helps New Zealand Post 198/3
Earlier, Daryl Mitchell led New Zealand’s batting effort with an unbeaten-looking aggressive approach, scoring 89 off 52 balls to help the hosts post 198/3 after being asked to bat first.
Bevon Jacobs provided valuable support with a quick 39 off 23 deliveries, and the pair added 75 runs for the fourth wicket to give New Zealand a strong finish.
The hosts had suffered an early setback when Arshdeep Singh dismissed Tim Seifert for just two runs. Mitchell and Finn Allen then took responsibility for rebuilding the innings and putting pressure back on the Indian bowlers.
Allen kept the scoreboard moving with regular boundaries and quick running between the wickets while Mitchell was always on the attack when the opportunity arose.
Finn Allen, Glenn Phillips Fall As India Fight Back
Allen scored 40 off 25 balls, hitting five sixes before Nitish Kumar Reddy dismissed him. His partnership with Mitchell added 86 runs and put New Zealand in a good position to build a big total.
Glenn Phillips, playing his 100th T20I, could not make a major contribution. Axar Patel removed him for 17 in the 12th over, leaving Mitchell to shoulder much of the responsibility in the closing stages.
New Zealand reached 100/2 at the halfway mark and appeared capable of crossing the 200-run barrier. However, India tightened their bowling in the latter half of the innings and prevented the hosts from reaching that mark.
Mitchell continued to score freely, while Jacobs helped him add valuable runs towards the end. New Zealand eventually finished on 198/3, a total that proved insufficient against India’s extraordinary batting display.
For India, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy took one wicket each. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, meanwhile, endured another difficult outing on his return to international cricket, finishing without a wicket.
With the series already decided, New Zealand will now look to bounce back in the fourth T20I, while India will aim to continue their dominant run in the remaining matches.
