Three police officers have been suspended following allegations that Bangladesh cricketer Nayeem Hasan was harassed in Chattogram.

According to local media reports, those suspended include sub-inspector Mohammad Shafiqul Islam Bhuiyan, constable Mohammad Rasel Chowdhury, and another constable from the police operations management unit.

Authorities have also formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident. On Saturday, Shawkat Ali, commissioner of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police, visited Nayeem’s home and assured that disciplinary action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

What Bangladesh police said on the incident?

CMP deputy commissioner Amirul Islam said an inquiry had already begun.

“It appears initially that the officers involved did not follow proper procedures during the operation," Amirul told The Daily Sun. “We will ensure that he [Nayeem] receives justice, and whoever is found responsible will be brought under punishment."

What was the incident?

The incident reportedly took place late on Friday night after Nayeem returned to Chattogram from Dhaka. The off-spinner had travelled back after accompanying Prime Bank Cricket Club for a Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League match in Savar, although he did not play in the game.

Nayeem claimed that police officers stopped the CNG auto-rickshaw he was travelling in near Lalkhan Bazar and acted aggressively without giving any reason. He alleged that he was grabbed by the throat and forced into another auto-rickshaw before being taken to Khulshi Police Station.

Reports said several bystanders tried to tell the officers that Nayeem was an international cricketer for Bangladesh, but their efforts did not appear to make a difference. The 25-year-old was released early on Saturday morning and later returned home.

The incident sparked strong reactions from several Bangladesh players, including Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das, after details became public.

Both the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh condemned the alleged mistreatment and called for appropriate action.

BCB president Tamim Iqbal also voiced his support for Nayeem, saying the board would stand by the player and take all necessary steps regarding the matter.
