India’s rising spin talent Manav Suthar continued his impressive run by picking his maiden five-wicket haul for Warwickshire in the County Championship match against Somerset.

The left-arm spinner finished with match figures of seven wickets, including a superb 5 for 100 in Somerset’s second innings. Suthar had been signed by Warwickshire for two County Championship matches and ended his short stint in England with 11 wickets from just two games.

In the first innings, Suthar picked up two wickets for 50 runs from 18 overs. He had also taken four wickets on his County debut against Yorkshire, with two wickets in each innings.

The young spinner has been making headlines in recent weeks after a dream Test debut for India against Afghanistan, where he grabbed 10 wickets in the match. Many believe he could become India’s leading spinner in red-ball cricket in the years to come.

At Taunton, Somerset were bowled out for 208 in their first innings, with Australian all-rounder Beau Webster starring for Warwickshire with figures of 4 for 23. Suthar’s two wickets in that innings came from the lower order.

Warwickshire then responded with 330 runs. Suthar also made a useful contribution with the bat, scoring 28 runs, which included three boundaries and two sixes. Earlier in the season, he had scored 33 and 37 in his first County appearance.

Somerset performed much better in their second innings, posting 435 as the pitch became easier for batting. However, Suthar played a key role by striking at important moments and reducing Somerset to 148 for 6.

His first breakthrough came when Jordan Hermann (34) was caught in the deep while attempting a slog sweep. Tom Kohler-Cadmore (12) was then stumped after charging down the pitch, only to be beaten by Suthar’s clever delivery outside his reach.

Suthar also removed nightwatchman Josh Shaw (22), who had looked solid at the crease. Shaw pushed forward in defence, but the ball found the edge and was safely caught in the slips. The spinner later completed his first five-wicket haul in County cricket by cleaning up the tail-end batsmen. Chasing 314 for victory, Warwickshire were 34 for 2 at the latest update, with the match still finely balanced.
