Joe Root continues to show why he is one of England’s finest ODI batters. The veteran right-hander stayed in superb touch by scoring another half-century against India in the second ODI at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday (July 16).
Root had already played a match-winning unbeaten 76 in the opening ODI at Edgbaston on July 14. His latest fifty against India helped him achieve a rare milestone and put his name alongside some of the biggest stars in ODI cricket, including India’s Virat Kohli.

With this knock, Root has now scored 50 or more runs in five consecutive ODI innings for the second time in his career. He is the first England batter to achieve this feat twice and only the fifth player in ODI history to do so.

The only other batters to have reached this landmark are Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, Quinton de Kock and Babar Azam. Kohli leads the list, having produced five successive ODI scores of 50 or more on four separate occasions.
Root’s impressive run began during England’s ODI series against Sri Lanka in January 2026. He scored 61, 75 and an unbeaten 111 in the three-match series in Colombo. He then carried that form into the ongoing series against India, making an unbeaten 76 in the first ODI before following it up with another fifty in Cardiff.
Root is already England’s leading run-scorer in ODI cricket as well as in international cricket. Even after so many years at the highest level, he continues to deliver consistently and remains one of the most reliable batters in world cricket.
