India and Japan are gearing up for a historic T20I clash on September 22, ahead of the men's cricket competition at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya.
The match will be held as part of the Suzuki Cup and will serve as the commencement of celebrations for 75 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and India.
This match has added significance and is expected to play a key role in the cricketing scenario in Japan. It will also act as a warm-up match for India's men's cricket team before they participate in the 2026 Asian Games.
According to reports from Cricbuzz, there have been issues in finding broadcasters for this mega event.
Devajit Saikia Opens Up On Historic Clash
BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia highlighted the wider significance of the contest, describing it as an opportunity to take cricket beyond its traditional markets.
"Cricket's global journey is being shaped by moments that take the game beyond its traditional boundaries. The India-Japan T20I match on 22nd September '26 is one such moment, taking international cricket to Japan, connecting with a new audience and strengthening the game's presence in a region with immense potential," Saikia wrote on X.
Broadcaster Hunt Creates Fresh Challenge
Even though the event is important, the match has a lot of confusion behind the scenes since the broadcasting rights of the match have not been settled yet.
As per sources from Cricbuzz, the Japan Cricket Association has been in touch with ITW Universe about acquiring the rights. Additionally, it is said that ITW is looking for coverage options in India through FanCode, Sony, Star, and Zee.
A YouTube stream had been under consideration earlier; however, a TV deal has not been confirmed yet.
Moreover, the timing of the match has created more confusion; The T20I is superbly positioned just two days ahead of the men's cricket competition at the Asian Games, making it harder for the broadcasters to cover the match.
The match will also help India acclimatize to Japanese conditions and give them valuable game time to fine-tune combinations and build momentum ahead of the Asian Games.
Seeded directly into the knockout stage, India will begin their Asian Games campaign in the quarterfinals on September 28.
