India captain Harmanpreet Kaur reached massive milestone during the team's T20 World Cup 2026 clash against Pakistan at Edgbaston. The Indian captain became the team's highest run-scorer in Women’s T20 World Cup history, moving past former captain Mithali Raj.
Before the match, Harmanpreet and Mithali were tied with 726 runs each in the tournament. Harmanpreet broke the record with a single off the very first ball she faced.
India needed her early after losing two quick wickets inside the first four overs.
Shafali Verma got off to an attacking start by hitting left-arm spinner Sadia Iqbal for a six. However, the bowler responded immediately on the next delivery. A ball angled into the batter cramped Shafali for room, resulting in an edge that was comfortably caught by wicketkeeper Muneeba Ali. Shafali was dismissed for six.

Jemimah Rodrigues also struggled at the crease and scored just one run. Trying to play an aggressive shot against left-arm pacer Tasmia Rubab, she mistimed her attempt and offered a simple catch. Natalia Pervaiz completed the dismissal after grabbing the ball on her second attempt.

Harmanpreet’s Comments at the Toss
Earlier in the day, Harmanpreet won the toss and chose to bat first.
Speaking after the toss, she said the pitch looked good for batting and that India wanted to put a strong total on the scoreboard.
She also spoke about the team's confidence going into the tournament, saying the experience from the previous World Cup had given the players belief and motivation. According to her, the team had worked on several key areas in the lead-up to the competition and was now focused on playing good cricket.
Harmanpreet also confirmed one change to the playing XI. Bharti was included in the side, while Yastika, despite performing well recently, made way for her. India went into the match with a bowling attack featuring three spinners and two medium pacers.
