Jasprit Bumrah produced a memorable performance in the second ODI against England at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday. The Indian pace spearhead gave his team the perfect start by striking with the very first ball of England’s innings. Ben Duckett edged the delivery behind the stumps, where wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan completed a comfortable catch, sending the left-hander back for a golden duck.
The dismissal helped Bumrah achieve a unique milestone. He became the first Indian bowler to dismiss an England batter with the opening ball of an ODI innings, adding another record to his impressive career.
Duckett had looked in good rhythm during the first ODI at Edgbaston, where he scored a brisk 43 off 45 balls. However, Bumrah made sure there was no repeat performance in Cardiff, producing a perfect delivery to remove him before he could open his account.
Bumrah Makes an Impact with the Bat
Before making headlines with the ball, Bumrah had already played an important role with the bat. Walking in at No. 10, the right-hander remained unbeaten on 20 off just 13 deliveries. His quick cameo included three boundaries and one six, giving India some much-needed runs in the closing stages of the innings.
He stitched together a valuable 23-run partnership with Shreyas Iyer for the ninth wicket in only 19 balls. Bumrah took the attack to England pacer Saqib Mahmood in the 43rd over, smashing three fours and a six to lift India’s total beyond the 230-run mark. His late flourish ensured India had something competitive to defend after a difficult batting display.
India Bowled Out for 233
Earlier in the day, India were bowled out for 233 in 44 overs after suffering a dramatic middle-order collapse. Virat Kohli top-scored with a fluent 65 and looked set for a bigger innings, but once he departed, the visitors quickly lost control. India lost four wickets for just 15 runs in the space of 26 balls, allowing England to claw their way back into the contest.
Rohit Sharma’s poor run with the bat also continued, adding to India’s concerns at the top of the order and putting extra responsibility on the middle order.
England’s bowling attack made the most of the collapse. Jofra Archer led the way with figures of 3 for 47 from his 10 overs. Gus Atkinson also picked up three wickets, returning with figures of 3 for 50, while Saqib Mahmood claimed 2 for 52 as England dismissed India for what appeared to be a below-par total.
