'If He Keeps On Doing That...': Sunil Gavaskar Gives Crucial Advice To Sanju Samson To 'Keep On Getting 50s, 60s Every Time'

India cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has advised Sanju Samson to take a little time before going after the bowlers, after the wicketkeeper-batter played a brilliant knock against Afghanistan in the second T20I in New Delhi.

Samson smashed 57 off just 22 balls at the Arun Jaitley Stadium to help India beat Afghanistan by seven wickets and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

His start, however, was far from aggressive. After getting out cheaply in the opening match, Samson looked to settle in before opening up. At one stage, he was on 8 off 12 balls.

Once he found his rhythm, the right-hander changed gears completely. He reached his half-century in only 20 balls and finished with a strike rate of 259.09.

His strike rate was even better than that of opening partner Abhishek Sharma, who scored 39 off 19 balls.

What did Gavaskar say about Samson’s approach?

Speaking to the broadcasters, Gavaskar said Samson needs to find consistency in his batting. The former India captain felt that taking some time before attacking could help the Kerala batter score more regularly.

“It’s sometimes the consistency that you want and because the openers get most of the strike in a 20-over game, they have the most opportunities to score. Sometimes, like today, he played himself in and he started hammering the balls only later. If he keeps on doing that, I don’t think he’ll ever fail. He’ll keep on getting 50s and 60s every time,” said Gavaskar.

Why does Gavaskar want Samson to avoid going all-out early?

Gavaskar also pointed out that Samson can sometimes get into trouble when he tries to attack from the very first ball.

“It’s only when he looks to try and go bang-bang from the first ball, and then you have to do that if you’re chasing 190 or 200, then there is no option of doing that. But he’s a terrific player,” said Gavaskar.

Samson’s quickfire innings played a major role in India’s comfortable chase as they reached the target with 31 balls to spare. The win also sealed the T20I series for India, who will now face Afghanistan in the third and final match.
