Shreyas Iyer expressed his joy after being appointed as India’s new T20I captain during the BCCI selection committee meeting held on June 6. The star batter will take over the leadership role from Suryakumar Yadav, who guided India to Asia Cup and T20 World Cup triumphs after succeeding Rohit Sharma.

Speaking after leading SoBo Mumbai Falcons in the Mumbai T20 League, Iyer said it was a proud and special moment for him to be given the responsibility of captaining the national team.

“It feels amazing and is a huge honour to lead India. Representing the country is always special, and getting the chance to captain the team makes it even more memorable. I’m also happy with my performance today. I scored important runs and helped my team win, so it has been a perfect day for me,” Iyer said.

When asked about the fans who have stood by him throughout his career, the 30-year-old thanked them for their constant support and encouragement.

“I am truly grateful to all the fans. They have always backed me and shown faith in me over the years. Their support means a lot, and I want to thank them with all my heart. I have a lot of love and respect for them,” he added.

Shreyas Iyer's first assignment as India's T20I captain will be a five-match T20I series against England which is scheduled to take place from July 1. After that, Team India will play a two-match T20I series against Ireland before featuring in the Asian Games 2026 in Japan.
