Five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians were forced to make some major changes for the 58th match of the IPL 2026 against Punjab Kings on Thursday, May 14, as both captain Hardik Pandya and vice-captain Suryakumar Yadav missed the game.

Why Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav missed PBKS vs MI clash?

Hardik was unavailable because of back spasms, while Suryakumar missed the match due to personal reasons. In their absence, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took charge of the team.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Bumrah confirmed the changes in the side. He said Suryakumar was unavailable for personal reasons, while Afghanistan spinner Allah Ghazanfar was also ruled out.

Who featured for MI in SKY, Hardik's Absence?

With three players missing, Mumbai Indians brought in Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur and Raghu Sharma for the match. Senior batter Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, was named among the impact substitutes.

This match in Dharamsala marked a special moment for Bumrah, as it was his first time captaining Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Despite being with the franchise since 2013, the pacer had never led the team before. He also became the 10th player to captain MI in IPL history.

PBKS made changes for MI clash

Punjab Kings also made three changes to their playing XI. Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai replaced Marcus Stoinis, while Xavier Bartlett came in for Ben Dwarshuis. PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer also confirmed that Harpreet Brar replaced Yash Thakur in the lineup.
