A major controversy has erupted in cricket after a heated incident during the Tri-Nation series involving India’s teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sri Lanka’s Vishen Halambage.

What was the incident?

The 15-year-old Indian batter was seen pushing Halambage during an on-field altercation that took place after a tense Super Over clash. Reports suggest that the Sri Lankan player was constantly sledging Sooryavanshi and making comments about his performances in IPL 2026, which eventually tested the youngster’s patience.

The incident quickly went viral on social media, with many fans criticising Sooryavanshi for his reaction. Since then, there has been widespread speculation about whether the BCCI would take disciplinary action against the young cricketer.

Will BCCI punish Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has made it clear that the Indian board will not interfere in the matter and that any decision regarding punishment lies with the match officials.

“A lot of things are going on in social media that BCCI is contemplating action, etc. Do you want BCCI to step into the domain of match referee? Whatever had happened, it was a part of the game, and the BCCI had no role to play. The role is that of the match referee. If anything is going wrong, he will take a call, the umpires will take a call, and there is a system in place,” Saikia told PTI.

What led to the confrontation?

The drama unfolded during the Super Over in Dambulla. India A needed 14 runs from the last three balls, and Sooryavanshi was sent in to chase the target.

The task was extremely difficult. The youngster managed to score a two and a boundary but could not finish the job for his team. India A eventually lost the match.

As Sooryavanshi walked back towards the pavilion, the Sri Lankan players celebrated wildly. During the celebrations, some players continued their verbal exchanges, adding to the frustration of the Indian camp.

At first, Sooryavanshi and his batting partner Suryansh Shedge appeared to take the comments lightly. However, the situation soon escalated. Shedge turned around and confronted some of the Sri Lankan players, and moments later Sooryavanshi got involved and pushed Halambage.

The incident has since become one of the biggest talking points from the tournament.

While the clash has attracted plenty of attention, Sri Lanka Cricket has not publicly revealed whether any action has been taken against Halambage for his role in the episode.

Since the developmental tour does not come directly under the ICC’s disciplinary framework, the matter is being handled by the host board, Sri Lanka Cricket, through its own process.
