A 17-year-old aspiring cricketer allegedly died by suicide at her home in Nagpur after reportedly being upset over not making the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) team.

The teenager, Aditi Moreshwar Chaukande, was originally from Akola. She had been living in Nagpur with her mother for the last two years while working hard to build a career in cricket. Aditi trained at the Surve Cricket Academy, and her brother is also a cricketer.

According to the police, the incident happened at around 5:30 am on Wednesday at their apartment near the Jain Temple in the Laxminagar area of Nagpur.

Her family found her hanging inside the house and immediately informed the police.

During the initial investigation, police recovered an alleged suicide note from the house. Officers said the note suggested Aditi was deeply disappointed after not being selected in the recent VCA selection process. It reportedly included the words, "Mera selection nahi hua" ("I was not selected").

Speaking to news agency ANI, Bajaj Nagar Police Station Inspector Chetan Chouhan said Aditi and her brother were both pursuing cricket, and her brother had recently earned a place in the VCA team.

“The incident took place yesterday at around 5:30 am under the jurisdiction of Bajajnagar police station. Seventeen-year-old Aditi Moreshwar Chaukhande, a resident of the area near Lakshminagar Jain Temple, lived with her mother and brother. Her brother had gone out for two to three days. Both siblings were cricket players, and her brother had recently been selected for VCA," Chouhan said.

The police officer also explained what happened on the morning of the incident and shared details from the note recovered at the scene.

“Aditi had been pursuing cricket for the past two years and was working towards selection. When her mother woke up at around 5:30 am, she found Aditi hanging in the kitchen. She immediately called for help and rushed her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. When we reached the spot, we recovered a suicide note. In the note addressed to her brother, she wrote, ‘I could not get selected, but you have been selected. Play well, and I will always be with you throughout your life,'" he added.

Police are continuing their investigation into the case. The preliminary findings suggest that disappointment over the VCA selection may have been one of the factors behind the incident.
