West Bengal Election Result: Ahead of the results of the West Bengal assembly election, a Bangladeshi parliamentarian has sparked a row by claiming that Dhaka will face a refugee crisis if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is elected in Bengal. Akhtar Hossain, Member Secretary of Bangladesh's NCP, claimed that the BJP will send all the Bangladeshi residents back. His remarks came days after the pollsters predicted a tough fight between the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP, with a slight edge to the saffron party.

'BJP Will Push All The Bangladeshis'

While speaking in the Bangladeshi parliament, Hossain stated that the country should be prepared for a refugee crisis if the BJP wins in West Bengal. "If the exit polls in West Bengal show the BJP winning, and if the BJP forms the government there, they will push all the Bangladeshis into Bangladesh. This will create a major refugee crisis for us. We are worried about this," the Bangladeshi leader said, reported News18.

He further claimed that the BJP will push the illegal immigrants towards Dhaka, further urging all the parties to remain united. "We are regionally placed with many realities. BJP may ensure that a sea of migrants reach Bangladesh. There is no guarantee that Muslims (illegal immigrants) won’t be sent back from our neighbouring country. We have to remain one," Hossain said.

BJP Takes Dig At TMC

BJP Lok Sabha MP Nishikant Dubey, while reacting to his remarks in a post on X (formerly Twitter), alleged that the "helpers of TMC" have begun expressing their frustration. "Bangladesh MP Akhtar Hussain said today in the Bangladesh Parliament that the BJP's victory in West Bengal will stop infiltration and drive out Bangladeshi Muslims; this is dangerous," Dubey said in his post.

"The helpers of the Trinamool Congress are slowly coming to the fore," he added. The saffron party raised the issue of infiltration throughout the campaign. The results of the West Bengal assembly election will be announced on May 4.
