The United States is evaluating two specific ground assault options within Iranian territory. These potential operations come as a buildup of thousand of US troops continues in Persian Gulf. But the final confirmation remains pending from the US President Donald Trump, cited in the reports of The Atlantic
The proposed military actions focus on two primary objectives:
Kharg Island Seizure: To target Kharg Island, US planed to deploy Marines to take control of this strategic hub, which facilitates approximately 90 per cent of Iran's oil exports. US aim would be to destroy Tehran's main revenue stream and gain significant leverage for future negotiation.
Nuclear Material Recovery: A high-stakes mission involving Special Operations forces would enter mainland Iran to secure highly enriched uranium. This objective is categorised as exceptionally risky due to the potential for intense Iranian resistance and the logistical difficulty of extracting the material.
Risks And Military Readiness
US military officials cited in the report express caution, noting that neither operations ensures a definite conclusion or conflict or the removal of Iran's current leadership. Furthermore, these actions may not result in the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently closed and causing significant volatility in global energy markets.

Current Troop Movements
7,000 Total Personnel: 3,500 Marines and sailors have already reached the region, with an additional 3,500 expected shortly.
Specialised Units: Hundreds of Special Operations forces are already positioned for potential deployment.
Strategic Uncertainty
While some view the threat of a ground incursion as a tool to force Iran to the bargaining table, others within the military warn of a dangerous escalation. Should President Trump approve these plans and diplomatic efforts fail, the US could find itself in a protracted war characterised by sustained disruptions to the global oil supply and heightened regional instability. As of now, a final decision on whether to proceed with these ground missions has not been made.
