- US military operation against Iran cost $25 billion.
- Expenditure equals millions of mid-range SUVs in India.
- War caused global economic shocks, including oil price surge.
The ongoing US military operation against Iran, dubbed "Operation Epic Fury," has already imposed a massive financial burden on American taxpayers. As of April, direct military costs are estimated between USD 25 billion, a top Pentagon official said. In terms of Indian currency, it roughly translates into Rs 2,38,12,62,500-- an amount which can help millions of families to get mid-range SUVs.

Some analyses place the figure closer to USD 50-56 billion in the first two months. Early days were particularly expensive, with the Pentagon reporting USD 11.3 billion spent in the first six days alone, driven largely by high-end munitions like Tomahawk missiles, Patriot and THAAD interceptors.
Pentagon official claims $25 billion spent on Iran war
Daily burn rates have hovered around USD 500 million to nearly USD 1 billion, reflecting intense air and naval operations, precision strikes, and rapid depletion of advanced weapon stocks. Jules Hurst, who is performing the duties of the comptroller, told lawmakers on the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday that most of that money was for munitions. Hurst did not detail what that cost estimate included and whether it took into account the projected costs of rebuilding and repairing base infrastructure in the Middle East damaged in the conflict.

Rep. Adam Smith, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, responded to Hurst: "I'm glad you answered that question. Because we've been asking for a hell of a long time, and no one's given us the number."
Iran war cost= Millions of SUVs in India
To put this massive expenditure into perspective for Indian, it would be enough to fulfill dreams of millions of families willing to buy an SUV. Considering popular mid-range SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, or Mahindra Scorpio N typically cost between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 20 lakh ex-showroom, the amount is enough to buy more than 1,80,00,000 vehicles.
Even averaging a conservative Rs 10-15 lakh per vehicle, covering compact to mid-size models like Tata Punch, Nexon, or entry-level variants of larger SUVs, the direct war spending so far equates to enough funds to purchase roughly 1.8 crore to several crore affordable SUVs in India.
At an average price of around Rs 10-12 lakh, early war costs alone could theoretically equip millions of Indian families with new vehicles.
How Iran war cost could be an opportunity for developing nations
The comparison highlights not just the raw numbers but the opportunity cost. The huge amount of money that was spent on ruining Iran could transform transportation infrastructure, support electric mobility transitions, or fund social programs in a developing economy like India's, where SUVs symbolise rising aspirations and mobility for the growing middle class.

Beyond direct spending, the war has triggered secondary economic shocks. Disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of global oil passes, sent Brent crude surging past USD 120 per barrel at peaks, driving up global fuel prices. In India, already sensitive to oil imports, this translates to higher transport costs, inflation pressure on diesel and petrol, and drastic effects on everything from freight to household budgets.
