US-Iran War: Amazon's cloud computing operation in Bahrain was damaged on Wednesday after an Iranian strike hit the headquarters of Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) in Hamala, marking an escalation in attacks on US-linked infrastructure in the Gulf, The Financial Times reported.
Batelco, Bahrain's largest telecom operator, hosts Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure.
Earlier in the day, Bahrain's Interior Ministry said civil defence teams were working to extinguish a fire at a company facility after what authorities described the incident as an Iranian attack.
The drone attack caused structural damage, disrupted power supplies, and caused water damage to fire suppression systems. As a result, banking, payment, delivery apps, and enterprise software services were affected, Patrika reported. Since AWS is used in many countries, including India, there is a risk of service disruptions globally.
Iran Warning To US Tech Firms
The attack comes a day after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that it would target leading US technology firms, including Apple, Google, and Meta, if additional Iranian leaders were killed in "targeted assassinations."
In a statement, the IRGC accused both the US government and tech giants of 'ignoring repeated warnings regarding the necessity' of halting operations targeting top Iranian officials. The statement further claimed that these companies are the "main element in designing and tracking assassination targets".
The statement signalled that 18 companies, including Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Tesla, Palantir, and Nvidia, are potential targets for retaliation.
"Companies that actively participate in terrorist designs will face reciprocal action for every targeted assassination," the Guards said.
While the warning did not specify the exact location, it added: "Residents around these terrorist companies in all countries of the region are also advised to leave their locations within a one-kilometre radius and move to a safe place."
Drone Attack Hits Amazon Data Centres In UAE, Bahrain
In early March, Amazon said that drone attacks had directly struck two of its data centres in the United Arab Emirates, while a facility in Bahrain was damaged by a nearby explosion.
